There’s not much to dislike about the game of 3rd year DB Jason Verrett.

There are two attributes that any NFL franchise looks for in player personnel, youth & talent. With that truth established, DB Jason Verrett’s $778,591 yearly salary is a just recompense for what he brings to the San Diego Chargers organization on the defensive side of the ball. Though San Diego did sadly give up 22 passing touchdowns in 2015 making their presumably dynamic secondary seem all but a blur, they do have some hope knowing they have Verett out there on the gridiron.

San Diego will definitely need some relief if they plan on getting any improvement in the defensive passing game for the 2016 season. They took a striking blow this off-season, losing their all-pro FS Eric Weddle to the Baltimore Ravens. To be completely honest, Eric Weddle was the San Diego Chargers defense the last several season. There isn’t a single defensive play you didn’t see him in on the field. Just last season, he made 78 tackles (55 individual) for the Chargers and he only played 13 out of the 16 games on the schedule due to injury. Realize, that’s nearly 5 tackles per game. Talk about dedication. Secondly, the Chargers acquired DB Brandon Flowers from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014 thinking that they would sow up some of gashing in their secondary. Not only has Flowers been only sub-par, he’s now at the age of 30 and San Diego has tied up nearly $2.5 million of their cap room into his annual salary. Talk about bad investments, the Chargers need a recharge.

Now this off-season they did retrieve DB Casey Hayward from the Green Bay Packers. Not that this was a huge signing but that Hayward does bring “youth & talent” to the Chargers defense for the 2016 season. With the reprove and schooling Verrett has recieved from FS Eric Weddle, administration will be looking to Verrett to step up as the leader in the secondary. He most importantly has the discipline to do such and his current contractual situation is a win-win for both the San Diego Chargers franchise, the fans, and ultimately his self.

Statically, DB Jason Verrett earned his keep last year. 3 interceptions including a huge pick 6 on Monday Night Football against Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey (see video above), 47 combine tackles and 12 passes defended. There’s not really much more to ask for this young professional to do besides maintain at this point. With Jason in full focus as the man of the hour on defense in the San Diego Chargers locker room, things should only get better in 2016. Finally, the Chargers have some youth they can place full value in.
