Mike McCoy has had a steady tenure as the San Diego Chargers head coach but if the Chargers are as unsuccessful as they were last season this year does he deserve the hot seat?
Entering into his 4th year as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers, Mike McCoy brings his cool, calm, militant demeanor into 2016 looking to bring prosperity to the team. Over these 3 seasons (2013-16), his 23-27 career record (1-1 in the post-season) hasn’t been the most impressive. Last year, the Chargers finished last in the AFC West and produced a 4-12 season record. This record rendering was a franchise worst since 2003 when Marty Schottenheimer occupied the head coach position for the team. With that statistic, there is no doubt that Chargers expectations for 2016 will bring much pressure to McCoy. There’s isn’t much room for grace at this level of professional sports and he knows that this year he must show extreme improvement if he plans on keeping his job.

With all this being said the question still remains; does Mike McCoy really deserve the hot seat for 2016? Chargers owners and administration definitely perceived themselves to be an elite team in the modern AFC over the last 10 years of operations. Thriving for the last decade on superstar players like HB Ladanian Tomlison, QB Phillip Rivers, TE Antonio Gates and LB Shaun Phillips, San Diego produced post-season wins in 2007 (AFC Championship loss), 2008, and 2013. After the departure of Norv Turner in 2013, the Chargers brought in Mike McCoy to bring a new virile feel to a team that had been previously led by older coaches. They also put faith in HB Ryan Matthews (currently playing for Philadelphia) who remained injured and ineffective during his tenure with the team. Now, the slight hope the Chargers had on the defensive side of the ball in S Eric Weddle has vanished and what sort of team San Diego will be on the gridiron is confusing. Now there is a lot of good talent on the Chargers roster undoubtedly, but the suspense of entering the 2016 season is beginning to heighten. Especially with rookie DE Joey Bosa and his ongoing shenanigans.

There is one thing that favors the San Diego Chargers and Mike McCoy in 2016; the fact that they finished last in their division. This shame/advantage means that their season schedule will feature the 4th seeded teams from each of their AFC counter-parts (Browns, Dolphins, Titans and etc.) Now San Diego doesn’t appear strikingly better than the opponents inked in on their schedule, but they do still have an experienced soldier leading their charge in QB Phillip Rivers and enough fire power to establish themselves worthy. Unfortunately, if they aren’t able to render at least 7 wins this season, head coach Mike McCoy and his Chargers tenure will likely be in high jeopardy.
