The Tennessee Titans triumphed over the Chargers in Week 1 of the NFL Preseason 27-10. How should the Chargers address this defeat?

Many Chargers fans may say that it’s only a Preseason loss when referring to the slaughter they took Saturday night at Nissan Stadium. Though this is true, the showing their team put on against the Titans Saturday night was severely pitiful. The defensive deficiencies are as clear as a glass window for San Diego, especially against the run. Highlight reels of missed tackles, dispositioned defensive players, and 20 yard rushing gnashes has to have Chargers fans highly concerned entering into the 2016 season. They gave up a 71-yard rushing TD to HB Demarco Murray in the 1st half (finished with 93 yards on 6 attempts). It didn’t stop there, 2nd string HB Derrick Henry produced 74 yards on 10 attempts and a touchdown, and 3rd string running back HB Bishop Sankey put forth 52 yards on 3 attempts featuring a 41-yard touchdown in the second half to put the icing on the cake for the Titans. So, altogether that means the Chargers gave up three rushing TD’s to three different running-backs while the Titans starting QB Marcus Mariota watched from the sidelines. This not good at all.

So what should we take away from this experience as Chargers observers. Most importantly, let me start by saying that the reliance of QB Phillip Rivers to save this slew-footed defense is beginning to run dry. Before long, Rivers will have a noodle arm from tossing the pig-skin so heavily and more importantly, his hall of fame career is slowly coming to an end. HB Melvin Gordon did produce a touchdown during the 1st half but he seemed to be running as slow as molasses getting to the goal line. This team seems very unimpressive and its not completely on the fault of head coach Mike McCoy. Hopefully, McCoy will be able to find work after this season because he’ll need to refine his resume presentation if San Diego continues to play this way heading into the season.
